Fire Extinguishers for Hair Salons

Hair Salons should be equipped with fire extinguishers that are suitable for use on combustible materials like wood, paper, textiles and fabric. The other type of fire that may happen in a hair salon is an electrical fire.

1) A water fire extinguisheer is still one of the most useful and cost effective of all available fire extinguishers and is suitable for all fires of combustible materials.

2) CO2 is suitable for electrical equipment and is recognised for its non-damaging highly effective performance and cleanliness. Because the gas is harmless to delicate equipment and materials, it is ideal for modern salon environments where there are electrical risks with equipment like straighteners, hairdyers climazones, computers and where oils, spirits, solvents and waxes are in use.

Staff must be familiar with the fire extinguishers and their uses for particular fires. Fire extinguishers must be checked by your supplier at least once a year to confirm that they are full and in perfect working order. Guidelines to simple safety can be accessed on the Health & Safety Authority website: http://www.hsa.ie/eng/Work_Safely/Simple_Safety/

Team building for Hairdressers

Just because people work together as a group, it doesn’t automatically mean they are a team. Business coach Peter Lunn looks at how to build and manage an invigorated team.

Peter-Lunn.gif

What Is A Team?

A number of people with shared objectives, who co-operate to achieve them in a way that allows each individual to make a distinctive contribution.

Where Do You Begin?

With you. Teams require leaders, but being the boss does not automatically qualify you to assume the title. If you are serious about creating an energised team, ask yourself how energised you are.

Lead from the front and by example. Inspiration is all around you, but if you don’t seek it you won’t find it. If you’re not looking for it, why not?

It’s Never Too Late To Change

What needs to change? Possibly the way you think, because you need a positive outlook to make a positive difference to yourself, your colleagues and your clients.

Many employers perceive themselves as right, and anyone who thinks differently as wrong. Question your own actions and invite your colleagues to appraise your behaviour and performance. Constructive feedback will help you to move in a profitable direction.

Poor managers often blame their colleagues for bad performance and think ‘if only I could get the right people’. It’s a myth to believe you will find the perfect person, but all employees have the potential to be excellent with the right support and encouragement.

What’s The Next Step?

Invest. This is the stumbling block for many employers but it’s not just about money. You must also invest quality time, knowledge and skill.

You might spend 40 hours a week with someone and still not know them. You might allocate time for a review, but if you are less than confident or lack understanding of purpose it could be stressful for you and demotivating for your employee.

If this is you, then you must learn how to connect and engage to make this scenario a meaningful experience.

Managing With Impact

A recent survey revealed that approximately 25% of employees leave their jobs because they do not receive constructive feedback on their performance from management.

It makes sense to learn how to present feedback and coach people to deliver improved performance.

Being The Best

In my experience, there are many fantastic teams out there. Large or small, the investment is completely relative and results will be proportionate to your investment.

The Key Points

  • Your team members need to understand your business goal which must be:
    • clearly defined
    • achievable
  • You need to appreciate and accomodate each individual’s goals, strengths and weaknesses and accommodate
  • Give your team appreciation and recognition for their contribution
  • Don’t be afraid to reprimand when required
  • Look inside yourself and your people and discover the energised team just waiting to be released.

Scalp Conditions -Impetigo

Visiting clients to your salon may have different hair and scalp conditions. While the client may not know they have the condition it is important for you as a hairdresser to be able to recognise these conditions as in the the case of infectious conditions the condition could be spread between clients. If a hairdresser is certain the condition is infectious they must inform the client tactfully and in a manner that ensures the client will not be too embarassed to come back again. No service may be given and advice to client on appropriate treatment should be given.Over the coming weeks we will examine different infectious conditions  and how to recognise them.

IMPETIGO

This is an infection of the skin caused by bacteria. it is commonly seen on the face and scalp. The bacteria invade the top layer of the skin, the epidermis, causing small blisters filled with clear liquid to occur. The liquid thickens and a yellow crusty scab appears. it is highly infectious and can be spread directly by touch or inderectly on tools or towels. On the scalp you may simply see tiny yellow posthules. No service should be given.

Choosing a hairdressing course

When a student decides they want a career in hairdressing it can be difficult to choose what course will be most beneficial. Some colleges do not have qualifications that are recognised within the industry. At the College of Hairdressing, Connaught,  students complete the Level 2 City & Guilds 3014 over a 12 month period. This course’s standard is set by City & Guilds and external assessors confirm the international standards are being met prior to the Certificate being awarded. Based at Forster St. Galway, beside Eyre Square, students improve their skills by working in the college’s dedicated training salon which has built up an extensive clientele over the years.

Professional Salon Image

Professional Image

Image is the pivotal focus for Hairdressing. Each hairstylist and salon will seek to project an image, which will relate to a particular type of clientele. This will usually be shown by the appearance and manner of the hairstylist, together with the style of hairdressing produced. Each salon will have an image which will focus on a specific segment of the market and will be quite clearly defined, whether it be by the salon décor, façade, atmosphere or a combination of all three.

Other salons will have a professional image, which will be attractive to a wider market segment in terms of gender and age. Hair salons must acknowledge the importance of its appeal to a wide market to ensure it is not being pigeon holed into a particular market segment. For example an ultra modern salon may appeal to a young market but may be offputting to the older consumer. In a recession the younger market is more likely to change due to redundancies or emmigration, hence it is vital to have an appeal to as many people as possible.
